Choosing Between New & Used Shipping Containers
If you’re reading this article, then you’ve likely already decided that buying a container is best for you. The next question on your mind might be, “What condition of container is the best fit for me?”
Many customers are initially drawn to “Used” containers because they’re more budget-friendly. However, we often find that even experienced buyers can begin to rethink their options once they see and learn more about the differences between the various conditions available.
Below, we break down the features and differences between the two common conditions you’ll hear while exploring your storage options. We’ll go over what you can expect from each option to help you make the best choice for your needs.
New Pro-Boxes
(often called "one-trip" containers) are fresh off the boat from China, built specifically for sale or rental in North America. They usually come in a nice clean Grey or Beige color that looks good in almost any neighborhood or business setting. Plus, they feature convenient waist-height door handles, anywhere from 4 to 10 vents on the sides for ventilation, and handy lock boxes that are securely welded to the doors. Inside, you'll find D-Rings every 4 feet along the walls, perfect for tying down your items or even setting up shelves. Plus, the heavy-duty rubber seals on the doors are great for keeping your belongings moisture- and rodent-free!
Used containers
have had a bit of a journey when compared to their one-trip counterparts. They've been out in the world, transporting goods for about 7 to 15 years, before being retired from the shipping lines. While they may show a little wear and tear—think some rust or dents—and their colors can vary depending on their shipping line origin, they're still a solid option for storing tools or outdoor equipment on a farm or acreage. Keep in mind, they often lack some of the added features, like lock boxes and extra vents. It's also not uncommon to see some quality differences, such as stiff doors, scuffed floors, and signs of repair, due to their previous use in transporting goods overseas.
If you care about how it looks, or if you’re storing valuable things like important documents or cherished family heirlooms, going for a new Pro-Box is probably your best bet. But if you’re just looking for a place to keep yard tools, dirt bikes, or quads and appearance isn’t a big deal, a used container might be just what you need!
